Tracing is a technique used to locate people or a business that have disappeared, whether intentionally, or not. Tracing is a service that involves collecting as much information as possible about people who are missing, and then analysing and verifying the information in order to locate them. Individuals who perform this service are often called tracers.

Tracing and data services are used by many types of businesses, including:

  • Bailiffs and enforcement agencies
  • Lawyers and paralegals
  • Credit control departments within private businesses
  • Investigators
  • Collections agencies and debt collectors
  • Process servers

One of the most common reasons for using a tracing service is to help find missing customers where a debt is due, or connected with legal services where court documents need to be served and where witnesses need to be found. The service is also used to trace directors, business owners, former tenants, property owners and customers who have lost contact with current or former advisors.

dataTrace UK can undertake searches using minimal information, but the more information that is provided, the more likely the trace will be successful. Types of information that could be used include:

  • A last known phone number or email
  • Date of birth or approximate age
  • Last known employment
  • Information on spouses, parents, other relatives, friends, business associates

Tracers use various search methods to locate the missing person, such as:

  • Job application information
  • Public databases and internet searches
  • Corporate searches
